Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena® is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that is used as a form of birth control. The IUD is a soft, flexible, T-shaped piece of plastic that contains the hormone levonorgestrel. Mirena® is a long-acting reversible contraceptive lasting up to 5 years, and has to be inserted and removed by a qualified medical professional. The device releases 20 micrograms per day and eventually declines to 14 grams after 5 years — less than oral contraceptives that contain 150 micrograms.

Mirena Side Effects:

Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of the Mirena® device, including:

  • Perforation of the Uterine Wall
  • Migration of the IUD to Outside the Uterus
  • Expulsion of the Mirena IUD
  • Infection
  • Complications that Result in Surgery to Remove Mirena IUD
  • Ovarian Cysts: Enlarged follicles (ovarian cysts) have been diagnosed in about 12% of the subjects using a hormonal IUD. Most of these follicles are asymptomatic, although some may be accompanied by pelvic pain or dyspareunia.
  • Infertility has recently been blamed on it’s use

is the trade name for a combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring manufactured by Merck (formerly Schering-Plough, formerly Organon) that is available by prescription. It is a flexible plastic (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer) ring that releases a low dose of a progestin and estrogen over three weeks.

To date, over 730  lawsuits have been filed in state and federal court. The company denies the allegations and trials are scheduled for 2012. The plaintiffs allege multiple problems with the advertising of NuvaRing and the downplaying of its risks and deaths.  NuvaRing  side effects are the same as any of the other birth control pills: blood clots, DVT, Pulomary Embolism, heart attack, stroke, ect.

Nuvaring Warning

Manufactured by Ortho-McNeil, side effects are caused by the delivery of estrogen and progestin through a transdermal patch placed on the skin. This method of delivery has different results than metabolizing the hormones orally with birth control pills.  The manufacturer was aware of the dangers posed by the patch when they introduced this product in 2002. They have failed to adequately warn that the patch carries an increased risk of potentially life threatening blood clots, which is three times higher then the risk associated with the use of traditional birth control pills. This carries the same dangers as with all other birth control pills; heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, DVT and pulmonary embolism.
